He has witnessed a total eclipse of the sun, many lunar eclipses, Haley's comet, Hale-Bop comet, and spent a night with a Cal Tech astronomer at the 200 inch reflecting telescope on Mt. Palomar.In 1990, Dr. Buettner rode a bicycle up much of the West Coast and across the country from Oregon to Washington, DC. He carried all his own gear, camped out when he could, and took many photographs. The trip covered over 5000 miles and took three and a half months.Dr. Buettner has volunteered time with the YMCA after-school reading program, worked on Habitat for Humanity houses, taught religious education classes at his church, and played with the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra. Dr. Buettner works part time for The READ Center, a non-profit organization that teaches literacy skills to adults in Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, Petersburg, and Amelia.
